The flat table ( ...
The flat table (routed part) starts about 1 & 1/8" in from the top of the tube. Hope it works out well.

Quick question ...
Quick question please. How far from the blow end do I begin the routed table? Your diagram is not quite clear to me...
Thanks for making this flute instruction available. I hope to make playable flutes for the impoverished children in my neighborhood so they can make music to cheer themselves...

Thank you for ...
Thank you for taking time to explain everything...from how to make it and how to make the sounds. I never had the chance to learn to play a recorder (or anything) in school and always wanted to, Now I understand the dynamics of the sounds from the mouth and the reasons for the placements and accuracy of the holes, etc. Fantastic job!!! When you teach people this, they'll know it for the rest of their lives!! I'm happy to have found your video, to say the least! Will never forget you!

This flute is more ...
This flute is more of a Recorder/Flute hybrid. The cylindrical tube makes a flute sound but the method of generating the sound is that of a Recorder. The parts of the flute need some correction. The 'fipple' typically is the block or stopper that fits inside between the 2 holes but usually has a flat side to allow air to pass through the inside of the tube. However with this flute, the air passes over the 'outside' using a PVC sleeve or what's known as a 'fetish'.

A traverse flute ( ...
A traverse flute (played sideways) has a hole that you blow air over to make the sound. It requires much more practice to get a good sound but also allows more control over the airstream. The straight PVC flute on the video makes the air pass over the hole in a predetermined way (like a Recorder), so you anyone can make a sound but there's not as much control over tone, volume (dynamics)etc. Both designs will sound very similar but the straight one is much easier to get a sound with.

It can only be ...
It can only be played straight as you see it being played. This makes it foolproof to play for beginners but has some limitations. The traverse (or sideways) type gives you more control in making the sound but getting the correct shape with the mouth (embouchure)is more difficult. But this flute could be made with a round hole at the same spot and played sideways. The hole would be apprx. a 1/2" in diameter, or 12.7mm.
