I would insist on bringing it in your hand luggage, since it is fragile.

Depends who you fly with. Some will let you take two pieces of hand luggage, others only one, check with you carrier. And crawl if necessary.

Musician’s Union have ensured you are aloud to take a musical instrument as well as your main luggage. You can even take this on as hand luggage.

Went to France in May with a guitar and a mandolin. I was able to take them on board, even though I have a carry on as well.
